Stuff To Do & What It Costs

Everything priced for the five of us (the boys count as adults almost everywhere at 13+, but all three still fish free β€” Oklahoma doesn't require a license until 18).

Decide & Book

The three big calls, researched from each outfitter's own pages. Prices move β€” the phone number is the final word β€” but this is enough to decide.

Beavers Bend Depot & Trail Rides Β· inside the park

Horseback β€” the returning champion

$50 + tax / person 45 minutes On the hour from 9 am 250 lb max per horse

There's no brochure β€” this is a call-and-ride outfit with a one-page website. What you get: 45 guided minutes through the pines on dead-calm trail horses, departures every hour starting at 9. Arrive 30 minutes early; reservations are "highly recommended," and October weekends sell their saddles.

  • Options Trail ride (ages 5+, $50 + tax β‰ˆ $55) Β· toddlers under 5 ride double with an adult ($60 + tax) Β· pony rides for the under-60-lb crowd Β· the β…“-scale train runs from the same depot ($12 / $10 kids, every 30 min) β€” a ride-then-ride double-header
  • The math Five saddles β‰ˆ $276 with tax; tack on the train for everyone β‰ˆ +$60
  • Fine print They do weigh the 250-lb limit. Long pants make the next day nicer.
Rugaru Adventures Β· Stevens Gap Rd, ~10 min from camp

Zipline β€” six lines, half a mile of flying

$89 + tax / person 6 lines Β· 300–1,100 ft ~2 hours 70–250 lbs, checked

Over half a mile of cable through the Ouachita foothills, with the longest single run at 1,100 feet. Braking is automatic β€” nobody has to remember to hand-brake at 30 mph β€” and everyone is weighed (discreetly) at check-in. Expect two moderately steep uphill walks between platforms; that's the price of the views.

  • The boys Under-18 zips with a parent's signed waiver β€” and all three are comfortably inside the 70–250 window
  • Wear Closed-toed shoes with a heel strap (no slides), pockets empty, long hair tied back
  • Book smart All sales final β€” weather cancellations refund, late arrivals don't. Book a clear morning and leave camp early
  • The math All five β‰ˆ $485 with tax Β· parents-only escape β‰ˆ $195
Hochatown Rescue Center & Petting Zoo Β· US-259, on the strip

The petting zoo β€” 95% rescues, 100% hands-on

$14 (ages 13+) $10 kids Β· under 2 free Plan ~2 hours October hours: 10–5

Twenty-five years of taking in injured, orphaned and surrendered animals β€” a camel, kangaroos, deer, goats, bunnies, birds, reptiles. Buy feed at the gate and everything with legs mobs you (politely). This is the one stop where the teenagers stop being too cool.

  • Timing Go right at opening β€” animals are hungriest and friendliest before lunch
  • October gotcha Winter hours start in October: 10 am–5 pm, not the summer 10–7 β€” don't make it the after-dinner plan
  • The math All five of us = $70 + feed money (bring small bills)

Details pulled from the outfitters' own sites July 12, 2026. Want another one researched to this depth (pontoon, RZR, escape room)? Drop it on The Board (top of The Plan).

Build The Trip

Chips with a β˜… and gold ring are already on the official itinerary (see The Plan). Tap anything else you're lobbying for β€” picks are shared for the whole family (give another phone a minute to catch up), and when you're serious, make it formal with the πŸ’‘ Suggest-a-change button on that day. Green = free. Costs are for the five of us.

Official plan$0 + suggested additions$0 + base (booked sites, license, gas)$321 = trip total$200

Driver rules: Slingshot and RZR need a 25+ driver β€” one parent takes the boys in the RZR while the other runs the Slingshot, then swap the next day. Guide trips and ziplines should be reserved as soon as we book camp.

Plan for weather

If It Rains

October averages a few wet days here. The plan scales with the weather β€” and remember the campers' secret: a drizzle is the best trout bite of the week.

🌦️ Drizzle β€” lean in

  • Fish anyway: overcast + light rain = trout feeding confidently. Rain jackets are packed for exactly this
  • The Maze of Hochatown β€” giant wooden maze, fine in light rain
  • Beavers Bend Mining Co. β€” covered gem-sluice mining; buy a roughage bag and let the boys talk trash
  • Museum drop-in: Forest Heritage Center (free, in the park, 8–5)

🌧️ Steady rain β€” go indoors

  • Gutter Chaos, Hochatown β€” bowling lanes + arcade + food under one roof. The rainy-day HQ
  • Escape room + axe throwing at Hochatown Escape Games (both indoor, book same-day by phone)
  • Hester's Theatre of Magic β€” indoor live magic show on the strip
  • Candy-den-and-fudge crawl, then a long Grateful Head lunch

β›ˆοΈ All-day washout

  • Museum of the Red River, Idabel (35 min) β€” FREE, and the lobby is a 40-foot Acrocanthosaurus, Oklahoma's state dinosaur, found 10 miles away. Tue–Sat 10–5, Sun 10–3, closed Mondays
  • Pair it with the Idabel Walmart restock run β€” one trip, two errands
  • Camp canopy day: poker championship, chili leftovers, dogs snoring in the tent
  • Swap days freely β€” every outdoor activity on the itinerary moves; only the RZR/pontoon bookings need a reschedule call (numbers on the directory)

The Trip Ledger

Every dollar the trip actually costs, logged as we spend it β€” everyone can add entries, everyone can watch the total chase the estimate. Consider it a field course in vacation economics, boys.
