Tents Behind the Dunes

October is Galveston's secret season: 76โ€“83ยฐ days, water still warm enough to swim, summer crowds gone, and the bull redfish run peaking in the surf. The beachside loop puts the Gulf out the front flap โ€” you fish before breakfast because the water is right there.

๐ŸŽฃ

Surf fishing

No license needed inside the park. Cheap surf rods + fresh dead shrimp = whiting and croaker all day for the boys, with a real shot at a bull red. Fish-cleaning station on the bayside.

๐ŸŒŠ

Actual beach

~36 beachside sites behind the dune line with electric + water and direct beach access. Treeless and windy โ€” long stakes, guylines, and shade are non-negotiable.

๐ŸŽก

Galveston town

Pleasure Pier over the water, Moody Gardens pyramids, the Strand's shops and seafood. Built-in rainy-day and bored-teen backups.

Getting there

The Long Haul South

~289 miles straight down I-45 โ€” call it 5.5 hours with a Buc-ee's stop (mandatory, obviously). Longest drive of any option; worth it only if the beach is the point.

Availability โ€” July 10 check

The reservation list showed beachside tent sites and all 10 tent platforms open for mid-October, ~$25/night + $2/person/day activity fee. That check was list-level (not night-by-night verified like Beavers Bend), so confirm the exact nights when booking. Beachside = view + wind; bayside = shade pergolas, calm water, kayak launches, 1.5 mi from the sand.
